The Arjun and Aman book series is inspired by my own personal journey of being a mama to two young Sikh boys who are toddlers. My sons both love reading books, but the books currently available don’t relate to their upbringing with Sikh values in the western world. As Patka wearing boys, I found there was a need to show Sikh representation in the form of characters that look similar to them so that they could relate. Thinking there must be other parents in the same boat, that’s where the idea of Arjun and Aman was born!
Arjun and Aman are siblings who are trying to navigate every day life and learn about Sikhi. Arjun wears a Patka and Aman has her long hair. Both wear a Kara. The most identifiable traits of Sikhs.
The books have been specifically written for toddlers, young children, Sikhs and non-Sikhs in a simple and fun way. Seeing Sikh characters in a book will give Sikh children a sense of belonging. And for those who aren’t Sikh, become more accepting and kinder to those who may appear “different” as they are exposed to a different religion and culture.
To those parents who want to teach their children about their roots, to schools who want to educate students about other religions, Vaisakhi, starting school, going on holiday – there’s something for everyone!
